June 24, 2008 — Several Central Florida counties want to withdraw water from the St. John’s to supplement dwindling groundwater supplies. A pending request from Seminole County would take out only a few gallons a day, but environmentalists worry it could open the door to future withdrawals by other counties, amounting to more than a hundred million gallons a day. People near the mouth of the river in North Florida are crying foul. Lawsuits have been filed and protests launched.
